Common Referencing Errors

As Technical Paper Co-Chair for SOUPS 2026, I have been leading a group of volunteers that are checking references in accepted but not-yet-published papers. I have also been reaching out to authors about the more serious issues we observed and how they have come about. Below I detail recommendations based on our observations. Each recommendation is paired with a “why” where I talk about what we observed.

Maclean's: article on outages in 2025 (by me)

I authored a “year ahead” piece for Maclean’s magazine about what outages are likely to look like in 2025: More Frequent - and Disruptive - Tech Outages Are on the Way. Spoiler: I think there will be more outages in 2025 many of which will be caused by a supplier having a problem or a security failure.

Writeup on Brian Krebs

Nice Wall Street Journal write up about Brian Krebs the cyber security investigative reporter. It has a couple of details about the Snowflake hack. But what I find most intersting is the commentary about how important personal security is when working in cybersecurity. Krebs has had to go to great lengths, including not registering to vote, in order to protect himself and keep doing the great journalisum he does.
